Hay, A Lesson Learned

How to remove soaking wet hay bales from a canal...

An event of interest occurred today while checking my canals. I noticed at one check area that there was a big rectangular mass lodged in the middle of the canal. I drove up to it and discovered that the mass I was looking at, was a bale of hay.

I was amazed to find such an item where normally sticks and grass are found. It does makes since however that the bale would float if the canal was deep enough.

I was called away to resolve another matter and so the bale sat for a period of time. I asked one of my coworkers about my bale, because it did not seem likely that it could be removed by hand or by my long pitch fork. His response surprised me with it's simpleness. He said, "Cut the bailing twine and it will flush downstream".

He came back to the bale with me and cut the twine which indeed allowed the blockage to relocate.

The simple way appears when we ask for help.

Hay, consider the lesson learned.
